Music and Health Workshop with the Strings and Chamber Music Department
The Philippine General Hospital Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Performing Arts Medicine team held a Music and Health Workshop with the University of the Philippines College of Music Strings and Chamber Music Department on November 26, 2024. Such a fun afternoon of learning about keeping musicians healthy and preventing injury. Our department faculty and resident physicians (myself, with Drs. Frances Carlos, Issa Abelita and John de Castro) discussed the risk factors for injury, general measures for injury prevention, nutrition, exercise, ergonomics, mental health and included participatory activities for relaxation techniques, warm-up and stretching exercises. All in all, it was a well-received and productive afternoon, and we are very grateful to the Strings and Chamber Music Department for letting us take over their ensemble class from 2:30 to 5:30 PM. We also invited them to our monthly Performing Arts Medicine clinic held every second Saturday of the month at the College of Music, from 1 to 5 PM.
It would be nice if we could do a session like this for every department, or maybe as part of the College of Music’s “Wellness Wednesdays” series. One of my professional goals is to eventually design a semester-long syllabus centered on the health of performing artists as part of the college’s undergraduate offerings.
Looking forward to more collaboration in the future!
