Medical Humanities back-to-back day
March 13, 2024
Medical Humanities module for Introduction to the Medical Profession (IMP) done for 1st year and 2nd year medical students. Whee Grateful for supportive co-faculty that helped facilitate the small group discussions today.
We started with a short talk by myself about the Medical (Health) Humanities, and then broke out into smaller groups to discuss a healthcare-related graphic novel that touched on several themes about doctoring and the hospital environment. I would prefer smaller groups for more intimate discussions (6-10 would be nice) but we’d need more faculty than we actually have at the department. At the end of the session, we asked the students to write “exit tickets” – three things that they learned today.
The IMP course is required in first and second years of the curriculum at the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine – William H. Quasha Memorial. Going forward, we will be including the Medical Humanities session in the first year IMP set of modules. We had to do back-to-back sessions (IMP 2 in the morning, and IMP 1 in the afternoon) as a “catch up” for the second year students who did not get this session last year in IMP 1.
