Medical Humanities back-to-back day

March 13, 2024 Medical Humanities module for Introduction to the Medical Profession (IMP) done for 1st year and 2nd year medical students. Whee Grateful for supportive co-faculty that helped facilitate the small group discussions today. We started with a short talk by myself about the Medical (Health) Humanities, and then broke out into smaller groups […]

Academic Adventures in Cebu

Earlier this year, I received an invitation to speak at the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society (UPMAS) 24th Grand Scientific Symposium (GSS) about integrating the Medical Humanities in the medical school curriculum. I was going to be part of a panel whose topic was new innovations in medical education: the other speakers were […]

Introduction to the Medical Humanities: Art Analysis Task

We had fun today: the Medical Humanities students presented their art analysis task, and we are now ⅔ of the way through the 2-week course. The students were asked to choose an art work related to health and/or medicine, and talk about it for 5-10 minutes during our session. Special thanks to the faculty who […]

Medical Humanities Elective: it’s showtime!

I think our first session (of six) went well for the inaugural Introduction to the Medical Humanities 2-week elective for interns (final year medical students – they are 2 months away from graduation!). As far as we know, this is the Philippines’ first elective within the medical school curriculum wholly dedicated to the Medical Humanities.

Medical Humanities Talk – Faculty Development

Monday morning (May 8, 2023) started off with Conversations that Matter – part of the St. Lukes Medical Center College of Medicine’s faculty development program. We played the video of my talk from the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges conference in 2022, and had a live open forum for questions and answers. In this way, […]

17. Thank Goodness for Zoom Conventions and Cooperative Hair

June 9, 2022 I survived today’s virtual convention, including the live panel discussion. It was a well-received session overall. Doreen was present for emotional support. I had to remind her that she should not block the camera. Thank goodness it was a recorded presentation from 6 weeks ago (see the difference in hair), not sure […]

16. Pegfilgrastim, and Doreen too

June 3, 2022 Update. Day 5 post-chemotherapy, and day 4 post-pegfilgrastim injection (recall: for increasing the infection-fighting white blood cells which can be depleted during chemotherapy). So far I have not seen crazy side effects of chemotherapy yet, except maybe the need to eat small frequent meals to prevent nausea. Hair is still intact, it’s […]

Inclusivity and disability in the news this week

I saw several pieces in the electronic media this week that highlight the growing efforts to include persons with disability in everyday life. The European Space Agency put out a call for astronauts with physical disabilities – a push for parastronauts to be included in the entering class of 2021. In its own words, the […]

Medical Humanities at the Philippine General Hospital, in the time of COVID-19

In April, 2020 a call went out for photos and written pieces chronicling the pandemic experience at the University of the Philippines and Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) – the plan was to collect these for the PGH Human Spirit Project. The pandemic isn’t over yet, but here are the fruits of that labor: a 3-volume […]

My Medical Humanities Journey

In the post introducing the blog (WORMHOLE), I mention that I’ve thought of the sciences and arts as two separate entities, with me having one foot in the sciences and the other in the arts and hopping in an “all or nothing” way between those two. I think the best illustration for this dichotomy happened […]
