A Field Trip to Antipolo – the Pinto Art Museum and Arboretum

Th University of the Philippines College of Medicine Committee on Student Resilience and Wellness sponsored a field trip to the Pinto Art Museum for the 2nd year medical students today – about 200 of them! Some of us faculty, mentors, along with psychiatry residents and fellows went with them to facilitate their small group discussions, processing and reflecting on their experiences at th museum. Dave the Travel Pig also came along!

The museum specializes in Filipino contemporary artworks, scattered across 7 galleries that incorporate nature (those big rocks) and have an airy well-lit space for showcasing the artwork. Owner Dr. Joven Cuanang is an 86-year old neurologist who lives on the property. He gave an inspirational talk to the medical students, followed by introductory videos about the museum and basic art analysis.

The Pinto Art Museum is located in Antipolo, Rizal province – known for being quite hilly and the museum’s grounds incorporate the terrain into the architecture, landscape and layout of public spaces. Lots of stairs (without handrails!) and uneven ground. Not exactly friendly to people with limited mobility. Antipolo is right outside Metro Manila but has areas which make you feel far away from the city and close to nature.
