Staying Up Late (or Early) for Performing Arts Medicine

Yesterday (more like earlier today – it was 1 AM) I had the privilege and honor to speak to medical students interested in PM&R (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Physiatry, Rehabilitation Medicine) from Chicago. The Chicago PM&R Medical Students Fellowship has a monthly meeting under the mentorship of Dr. Ravi Kasi at Rush University. They usually meet at 9 AM on a Saturday, but were accommodating enough to meet an hour earlier (with coffee and donuts!) to let me do my talk at 1 AM instead of 2 AM Australian Eastern Daylight Time. Fueled by an afternoon nap and more coffee than usual, it was a pleasure to tell them about how Performing Arts Medicine was my gateway to exploring PM&R as a specialty and how being a PM&R physicians are a good fit for keeping performing artists healthy so they can do what they love to do. A special thank you goes out to student doctor Hye-Jin Yun, class president and aspiring physiatrist who reached out to me for this talk and sent the screenshots. I’m excited to hear where she will end up for PM&R residency in next year’s match!
