Cross-cultural Healing and Ancestral Practices Panel at the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AAPMR) annual assembly
Cross-cultural healing and ancestral practices panel: We talked about bringing biomedicine + “other medicine” together = integrative medicine. 1 hr and 15 mins was not enough, people stayed for more discussion after we formally ended. Wow!
Many thanks to colleagues on the panel: Drs. Glendaliz Bosques, Irene Estores, Deborah Bernal, Zainab Al Lawati, and Monica Aceves.

I loved the two keynote plenary sessions from Thursday and Friday (missed the Lifestyle Medicine one on Saturday).
Dr. Glaucomflecken (Ophthalmologist and comedian Will Flanary, famous for his funny and insightful short videos) on Thursday with an excellent, excellent talk:
He also premiered a new video featuring a residency application interview for physiatry… so cool!
Friday’s keynote speaker was Josh Sundquist – author, motivational speaker, paralympic ski racer, TV producer, and a trans-femoral amputee famous for witty Halloween costumes incorporating his one leg:
The AAPMR annual assembly at the San Diego Convention Center had a long-ish but efficient registration line on the first day (Thursday, November 7) and I made it to the first concurrent session on time. Conference phone app has been useful so far. Historic gathering of 4,000 physiatrists at this conference – the biggest attendance ever for the annual assembly.
I visited the exhibition hall before the conference sessions started on Friday. The research hub has small-audience case presentations and e-posters. The adaptive sports area was ready for their workshop later in the morning. There’s a dog park (!) for pets traveling with delegates. Aside from the usual exhibitor booths, the coffee-catch up/breakfast area had color-a-surfboard stations to build awareness for a program that takes military veterans surfing.
