63. Hello from Doreen after a Long Time, and (the lack of) Bone Density
Hello from me and Doreen the Breast Cancer Mascot this Saturday morning, on the way to the hospital for my checkup She also kept me company while waiting to be seen in clinic.
Breast surgeon Dr. Aldine Basa met Doreen in real life for the first time today, and like most people she was surprised that Doreen wasn’t as big as she thought. All those close up photos really throw people off And since she is a breast cancer mascot, it is but fitting to put her right next to a breast model. Photo by Aldine.
To recap this latest round of doctor visits: chest wall ultrasound is fine, no local issues on what used to be the “breast bed”. Bone mineral density has slipped into osteopenia territory (i.e., I really have lost the protective factor of having estrogen on board to prevent bone loss… remember the tumor’s pathology showed it had estrogen receptors, so in order to reduce recurrence I am taking a medication that stops my body from producing estrogen). Doreen inspects the box before I self-administered the Prolia injection this evening – this medication slows down the decrease in bone mineral density and risk of fractures from fragile bones. Hopefully there will be no side effects.
